30% of New HIV Diagnoses in Argentina Are People Who Never Tested Before

28/06/2026 07:31 - Salud

On June 27, Argentina commemorated National HIV Testing Day, a crucial date to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis as a fundamental tool for prevention and access to timely treatment. In this context, the Ministry of Health of Río Negro—one of Argentina's 23 provinces located in northern Patagonia—reminded citizens that testing is free, voluntary, and confidential nationwide.

A Diagnosis That Saves Lives

Getting tested is both a right and an act of self-care. According to alarming data collected in Argentina, 30% of new HIV diagnoses correspond to people who had never undergone a previous test. This reflects the persistent barriers to early diagnosis in the country.

Four years after the sanction of National Law No. 27.675, which establishes a comprehensive response to HIV based on human rights and equity, the challenge remains reaching the entire population. Diagnosis allows for highly effective treatments that improve quality of life and reduce virus transmission.

Key Epidemiological Data

  • 30% of new HIV diagnoses are in people without prior testing.
  • Syphilis reached a record 46,799 cases in 2025 (117.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants).
  • 76% of syphilis cases are concentrated in people aged 15 to 39 years.

Combined Prevention Strategies

Testing is part of a combined prevention strategy that includes various tools:

Condom Use

Fundamental method for preventing HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

Treatments

Access to antiretrovirals that guarantee a full life and reduce viral load.

PrEP and PEP

Pre-exposure and post-exposure prophylaxis as effective barriers against infection.

Health Education

Promotion of stigma-free and discrimination-free environments.

What is PrEP and PEP?

PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is a preventive medication taken by HIV-negative people at high risk of exposure to reduce the chance of infection. PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) is an emergency treatment started within 72 hours after potential exposure to HIV. Both are available free of charge in Argentina's public health system.

The Ministry of Health continues to strengthen access to diagnosis throughout the province, ensuring timely and quality care for all residents.
