Europe Delays ETIAS Travel Permit Amid EES Biometric System Chaos

08/07/2026 15:27 - Internacionales

Context: What are the EES and ETIAS systems?

Europe has implemented new technologies to modernize and protect its borders, ensuring a safer journey for everyone. The Entry/Exit System (EES) is an automated border control that uses biometrics, such as fingerprints and facial recognition, to register travelers from third countries. On the other hand, the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) is an electronic permit required for nationals of visa-exempt countries planning to visit the Schengen area (the zone comprising 29 European countries that have officially abolished all passport and all other types of border control at their mutual borders).

EES Figures in the European Union

Although the initial transition generated some logistical challenges, the system already demonstrates a great management capacity:

  • 110 million: Travels registered by the EES.
  • 44,500 people: Denied entry for security reasons.
  • 1,500 border crossings: Of which only 20 were identified as complex management points.

Decisions for a More Orderly Future

On July 7, 2026, despite complaints about delays, the EU rejected suspending the EES, arguing that a suspension would cause greater administrative problems. The next day, on July 8, 2026, according to Euronews, the European Union decided to delay the launch of the ETIAS system. This measure is taken to ensure that the technological transition is smooth and to give time for airports and airlines to adapt to the EES.

The temporary exclusion option will end in September 2026, paving the way for a total and efficient integration that will benefit tourism and security on the continent. Source: Euronews
