According to local Argentine media such as La Política Online and Clarín, a consortium linked to the owners of the Inter Miami soccer club has reportedly secured the contract for the Vaca Muerta gas pipeline, a monumental infrastructure project valued at an estimated 1.2 billion US dollars.
For those unfamiliar with the local landscape, this news is highly significant. Vaca Muerta is one of the world's largest unconventional shale gas and oil reserves, located in the Neuquén Basin in southwestern Argentina. Developing its transport infrastructure is crucial for the country's energy independence and future export capabilities.
The Inter Miami owners include businessman Jorge Mas and former soccer star David Beckham. Jorge Mas is notably the chairman of MasTec, a major North American infrastructure engineering and construction company highly experienced in building pipelines. This business connection explains how a 'soccer club owner' could outmaneuver traditional industry heavyweights in a massive engineering project.
The defeated bidders are no small players. Techint, led by Paolo Rocca, is a massive multinational conglomerate that has historically dominated steel manufacturing and pipeline construction across Latin America. Meanwhile, Eduardo Mindlin is a prominent Argentine businessman and investor. The entry of international, sports-linked capital into this strategic energy sector marks a new, positive paradigm for Argentine infrastructure investments.
