The Argentine National Team is preparing for one of the most important matches in its history. This Wednesday, July 15, 2026, at 4:00 PM, the squad led by coach Lionel Scaloni will face England in the 2026 World Cup semifinals. The stage will be the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, United States.
FIFA confirmed that Argentina will use its alternate jersey for this decisive clash. The kit features a black base with blue details inspired by the fileteado porteño—a traditional, colorful artistic painting style native to Buenos Aires, often seen on historic city walls and buses. This jersey awakens enormous illusion among fans. Why? The Albiceleste (as the Argentine team is affectionately known, meaning 'White and Sky Blue') wore predominantly blue colors in their two most remembered World Cup victories against the English: Mexico 1986 and France 1998. Conversely, they wore their traditional light blue and white stripes in the defeats of England 1966 and South Korea/Japan 2002.
Argentina's fantastic present shares surprising data with those memorable tournaments. In all three editions, Argentina arrived undefeated at the clash with England after topping the group stage. Furthermore, in all three tournaments, they faced an Asian team in the first round: South Korea in 1986, Japan in 1998, and Jordan in 2026.
Another curiosity is that there were goals from Argentine defenders before the duel with the English: Oscar Ruggeri in 1986, Mauricio Pineda in 1998, and in this edition, Lisandro Martínez and Cristian Romero.
Both Carlos Bilardo in 1986 and Lionel Scaloni in 2026 have ties to the Argentine club Estudiantes de La Plata and sought to remove political weight from the match, referencing the 1982 Falklands War (known in Argentina as the 'Guerra de Malvinas'), a 10-week undeclared war between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands.
Mixing football with that war would be a lack of respect to our dead who are buried in the islands.
Scaloni took a similar stance, stating that people should not look for other motives, affirming it is simply a football match.
