Scandal and Antisemitic Slurs Force Evacuation During Judge Alfredo Lopez Impeachment Trial

A Climate of Extreme Tension in the Magistrates Council

On July 13, 2026, the fourth day of the impeachment trial (locally known as jury de enjuiciamiento) against the federal judge of Mar del Plata (a major coastal city in Argentina), Alfredo Lopez, ended amid an unprecedented scandal. According to judicial sources cited by Infobae, the hearing had to be suspended and the courtroom cleared after a group of the magistrate's supporters interrupted the proceedings with antisemitic and homophobic slurs.

The incident broke out during the closing arguments of the prosecution, led by council members Luis Juez and Alberto Maques, who requested the removal of the judge. Faced with growing tension and insults from the public, which included phrases like Argentina is not Palestine, the president of the Impeachment Tribunal, Marcelo Gaston Bartumeu Romero, ordered the evacuation of the room and requested police presence to guarantee the continuation of the hearing strictly with officials and advisors.

Context of the Accusation

The process against Judge Lopez originated from a series of complaints filed by the Delegation of Argentine Israelite Associations (DAIA - the main political umbrella organization of the Argentine Jewish community), national deputy Sabrina Ajmechet (president of the Argentine Forum against Antisemitism), and lawyers Yamil Santoro and Jose Magioncalda (Apollo Foundation). He is accused of systematic discrimination against the Jewish people and the State of Israel through posts on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

In his defense, the magistrate reportedly denied acting in bad faith, maintaining that his opinions are protected under freedom of expression. The defense categorized the process as an ideological persecution and requested the case to be dismissed.

Members of the Impeachment Tribunal
  • President: Marcelo Gaston Bartumeu Romero
  • Appellate Judge: Nestor Pablo Barral
  • Senators: Maria Belen Monte de Oca (LLA) and Maria Florencia Lopez (UP)
  • Deputies: Nicolas Mayoraz (LLA) and Christian Alejandro Zulli (UP)
  • Lawyer: Ana Beatriz Fernandez

An Exceptional Panorama for the Judicial System

Despite the tensions, this process demonstrates the functioning of the institutional mechanisms provided to maintain ethics and legality in the Argentine Justice system. The Magistrates Council (the body responsible for selecting, disciplining, and evaluating judges) is currently processing three simultaneous impeachment trials against federal magistrates, an exceptional fact that underscores the system's commitment to resolving conflicts institutionally.

In addition to the case of the Mar del Plata judge, it was reported that trials are about to begin against the federal judge of La Pampa province, Pablo Diaz Lacava (for threats and violence), and the federal judge of Rosario, Gaston Salmain (accused of corruption).

The verdict that will determine whether Judge Lopez's conduct allows him to remain in office is expected within the next 20 business days, in a framework of strict respect for legal procedures and the pursuit of justice.
