The educational sector in the Province of Buenos Aires is currently undergoing a period of intense dialogue and wage negotiations. In this context, the Multicolor list, an opposition faction within the Unified Union of Education Workers of Buenos Aires (Suteba, by its Spanish acronym), has called for a teacher strike on Tuesday, July 14, 2026. This measure will impact schools in the Greater La Plata area, specifically the cities of La Plata, Berisso, and Ensenada.
To understand this situation, it is helpful to know how unions operate in Argentina. Suteba is one of the largest teachers' unions in the country, representing educators in the Buenos Aires province. Like many unions, it has internal political factions. The Multicolor list is an opposition group within Suteba that disagrees with the mainstream union leadership, known as the Frente de Unidad Docente Bonaerense (FUDB), which recently accepted the government's wage offer.
The strike was announced in rejection of the wage agreement accepted by the FUDB. According to local media reports, the official offer includes a cumulative increase of 7%, distributed as a 5% raise for July salaries and an additional 2% in August, calculated based on June 2026 salaries. With this update, the minimum salary for senior teachers would reach $885,000 Argentine Pesos (ARS).
However, the Multicolor faction rejected this proposal, arguing it falls short of inflation. They are demanding a salary equivalent to the value of the basic family food basket per teaching position, an end to salary deductions for participating in strikes, and an increase in the education budget for scholarships, school infrastructure, and the School Food Service.
In addition to the strike, the sector has called for a mobilization on Wednesday, July 15, 2026. The concentration will take place at 10:00 AM, marching from the Government House to the General Directorate of Culture and Education of the Province of Buenos Aires.
María Inés Sequeira, the general secretary of UDEB Junín, provided details on the process and highlighted that the proposal's acceptance at the Congress of the Federation of Educators of Buenos Aires (FEB) was by a narrow margin. According to the local media outlet La Verdad Online, Sequeira stated: 'Since 2023 onwards, we teachers have been left below inflation, which is why we want a salary recomposition because we are very far behind.'
Furthermore, the union leader warned about the growing number of violence situations in schools, emphasizing that 'teachers are heavily mistreated' and that the boundaries of respect in the school environment have been lost, a problem that requires joint attention.
In a context of economic complexity, the government of the Province of Buenos Aires also announced a staggered 7% wage increase for security forces, replicating the scheme agreed upon with teachers and state workers (5% in July and 2% in August, calculated on June salaries). This is accompanied by a 30% increase in family allowances, as reported in the official press release from the Province.
