The Argentine government has taken a firm step in reorganizing its diplomatic representation in Spain by ordering the dismissal of Marcelo Alejandro Nimo from his role as Specialized Attaché for Investment Promotion and International Trade at the Argentine Embassy. The measure was officially enacted through Decree 588/2026, signed by President Javier Milei, Minister of Economy Luis Caputo, and Foreign Minister Pablo Quirno.
This decision stems from an internal dispute between Nimo and the Argentine Ambassador to Spain, Wenceslao Bunge Saravia. To understand this for our international readers: an embassy is not just a bridge for diplomacy but a tightly managed workspace. The conflict arose when the ambassador decided to revoke Nimo's office space within the diplomatic headquarters, located at Fernando El Santo 15 street, in the upscale Salamanca neighborhood of Madrid. This situation generated significant tension, ultimately requiring national government intervention to ensure the proper functioning of the diplomatic mission.
It is worth noting that Marcelo Alejandro Nimo was not a career diplomat—a status usually reserved for officials who climb the ranks of the foreign service through years of training. Instead, he was appointed to the position in August 2024 via Decree 722/2024, a common practice where governments appoint trusted professionals based on their specific private-sector expertise. At that time, his professional suitability for the role was highly praised. Following his appointment, Nimo publicly thanked President Milei with a casual message saying 'Gracias Javo' (a colloquial nickname for Javier).
The resolution of this conflict reflects the national government's commitment to maintaining a harmonious and efficient working environment in Argentine embassies around the world, always prioritizing the country's interests and its international representation.
