An intense snowstorm in the high mountain area of Mendoza created a risky situation for several travelers, but the rapid response from local security agencies led to a happy ending. 23 people who had been trapped in the snow were successfully rescued.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the rescue teams, all 23 individuals were brought to shelter with no serious injuries reported.
Mendoza is Argentina's most famous wine region, located at the foothills of the majestic Andes Mountains. The high mountain area is home to the Christ the Redeemer of the Andes monument, sitting at nearly 4,000 meters (13,000 feet) above sea level. Traveling through these Andean passes is a breathtaking experience, but during the Southern Hemisphere's winter (June to August), it becomes highly dangerous due to extreme cold and heavy snowfall.
The event occurred on a weekend when the province of Mendoza was under a snow and sleet alert. Authorities had issued warnings for various areas, especially in the mountain range, where low temperatures and snow accumulation complicate transit and visibility.
