Tragedy in Rosario: Woman Dies During World Cup 2026 Celebrations

20/07/2026 09:32 - Judiciales

A Day of Mourning Amidst the Celebrations

Rosario, July 20, 2026.

On July 20, 2026, the city of Rosario—Argentina's third-largest city, located in the central province of Santa Fe—was painted in light blue and white to welcome and honor the Argentine National Team following their runner-up finish at the World Cup 2026. However, a day that was meant to be a celebration of recognition ended in a fatal tragedy.

Around 7:00 PM, in the area of Avenue Pellegrini 4600 (a major thoroughfare in the city), a woman identified by authorities as Erica M. (45) fell onto the asphalt from a moving pickup truck while participating in the festive caravan.

Medical Response and Driver Detention

Personnel from the Integrated Emergency Health System (SIES, by its Spanish acronym) rushed to the scene, but unfortunately, they were unable to perform resuscitation maneuvers, confirming the woman's death at the site.

After confirming the passing, officers from the Santa Fe Police proceeded to detain the driver of the truck. The man was placed at the disposal of the authorities while the initial investigations of the case were carried out.

The Justice System Seeks Answers

The investigation was taken over by the duty prosecutor's office in Rosario. Experts are working on various hypotheses to determine the exact mechanics of the accident and whether it was a bad maneuver or an unfortunate incident amidst the crowd. Police sources indicated that they are expecting key results from public and private security cameras installed near Avenue Pellegrini.

Other Tragic Episodes During the Day

The Sunday of mass mobilization also registered other fatal victims in different cities:

  • Buenos Aires City: The city's Emergency Medical System (SAME) reported the death of two men, aged 67 and 88, due to cardiorespiratory arrest during the course of the final. A third man, 72, remains hospitalized with a reserved prognosis at the Hospital Álvarez.
  • Spain: In the country that was crowned champion, the death of a 14-year-old teenager was reported during the title celebrations.
