Education and Safety: Prioritizing Winter Weather in the Andes

According to the local news portal El Cuyo Digital, on Monday, July 20, 2026, the General Directorate of Schools (DGE) of Mendoza decided to suspend morning in-person classes in several localities across the province.

Mendoza is a world-renowned province in western Argentina, famous for its wine production and its location at the foothills of the majestic Andes Mountains. During winter, the high-altitude areas frequently experience severe weather conditions. The suspension is a preventive measure driven by meteorological reports confirming intense snowfall and rain, which have made access roads to educational institutions impassable. This action follows recommendations from the local Civil Defense to ensure the safety of students and teachers.

Localities Affected by the Suspension

  • MalargüeEntire department
  • Mountain areas of TupungatoHigh altitude zones
  • Uspallata, Polvaredas, Punta de Vacas, and Puente del Inca (Las Heras)High mountain passes

Note for travelers: Uspallata and Puente del Inca are key locations along the international route connecting Argentina and Chile through the Andes. Puente del Inca is also a famous natural landmark featuring a stunning rock bridge formed by thermal waters.

Uninterrupted Learning

School activities in the affected areas will take place virtually through the provincial educational platform, Escuela Digital Mendoza, proving that technology allows academic progress despite harsh weather.

Normalcy in the Rest of the Province

The DGE confirmed that educational services across the rest of Mendoza's territory are operating normally at all levels: early childhood, primary, and secondary education.
