Carlos Miguens Bemberg, Historic Leader of Argentina's Quilmes Beer, Passes Away at 77

Date of event: July 19, 2026

A Four-Generation Legacy in Argentine Industry

According to the Argentine media outlet Los Andes Economía, July 19, 2026 marks a turning point for the country's business fabric with the passing of Carlos José Miguens Bemberg at the age of 77, after battling cancer. As the son of architect Carlos Miguens and the celebrated filmmaker María Luisa Bemberg, Carlos represented the fourth generation of one of the most influential dynasties in Argentina.

The family's history in the industry began over a century ago. In 1860, his great-great-grandfather, Otto Peter Friedrich Bemberg, founded the Franco Argentina distillery, the seed of what would later become the most emblematic beer brand in the national market: Cerveza Quilmes, a brand as culturally significant to Argentines as Budweiser is to Americans or Heineken to Europeans.

The Golden Era of Cervecería y Maltería Quilmes

For more than ten years, Miguens Bemberg led Quilmes, guiding the company through a period of unprecedented growth and expansion. Under his leadership, the company expanded its industrial plants not only in Argentina but also in Chile and Bolivia, consolidating a dominant position in the mass consumer market.

His tenure also coincided with one of the company's most momentous moments: the sale process. Although sources indicate he was one of the main opponents within the family group of parting with the historic business, the majority stance ultimately prevailed. The Brazilian company Brahma (which later formed AmBev) acquired an equity stake for USD 600 million, and years later, in 2006, the Belgian-Brazilian conglomerate InBev completed the purchase of the entire company through an operation valued at approximately USD 1.2 billion.

Diversifying into the Future: Energy, Mining, and Agribusiness

After leaving the brewing leadership, the businessman demonstrated a remarkable vision for the future by redirecting his investments toward strategic, long-term sectors for the country:

  • Energy: Along with Merrill Lynch and other investors, he founded Sadesa, a company that acquired the Piedra del Águila and Central Puerto power plants, fundamental pillars of the national energy matrix.
  • Mining: Through Black River Mine Inc., the group controlled 43% of Patagonia Gold and promoted the development of the Calcatreu project in the province of Río Negro, a region famous for its vast natural resources.
  • Agribusiness and Food: He retained a stake in San Miguel (based in Tucumán), the world's largest industrial lemon processor, and in 2011 partnered with Brazilian company BRF to acquire the poultry firm Avex and the traditional dairy brand Dánica.

Passion for Sports and Commitment to the Country

Beyond business, Miguens Bemberg cultivated a strong passion for sports, standing out in polo (with a handicap of six goals, a high level in this traditional South American sport), golf, and motorsports. His commitment to the development of the private sector led him to join the group that drove the creation of the Argentine Business Association (AEA), an influential entity where he served as vice president. His competitive spirit and tireless effort for the nation's economic growth will leave an indelible mark on Argentine business history.
