The afternoon of Monday, June 22, 2015 turned into tragedy in the heart of Mar del Plata —Argentina's most famous beach resort city, located about 400 km (250 miles) south of Buenos Aires. A bus from Line 532 lost control and mounted the sidewalk on Boulevard Patricio Peralta Ramos, specifically in front of Bristol Skatepark, a highly popular area in the central coast where several public transportation stops are located.
The impact was devastating: the vehicle struck a group of people waiting in the area, destroying a bus shelter and part of the fence separating the skatepark. A massive emergency operation was immediately deployed with five ambulances from the municipal SAME (Emergency Medical Care System) and the provincial SIES, along with Firefighters, Civil Defense, Coast Guard, Scientific Police, and Municipal Traffic authorities.
Rescue teams worked intensively to free people trapped under the bus. The municipal Secretary of Security, Rodrigo Goncalvez, was present at the scene coordinating the operation.
Note: HIGA stands for Hospital Interzonal General de Agudos, the main public hospital in Mar del Plata.
The Prosecutor's Office No. 11 for Negligent Crimes, led by Prosecutor Germán Vera Tapia, launched an investigation classified as negligent homicide and negligent injuries. The main hypothesis points to a possible mechanical failure in the power steering system or the vehicle's brakes.
The bus driver was preventively taken to the Subcomisaría Casino, located just meters from the scene, while the exact causes of the accident are determined.
Next medical report: A new update on the injured victims' health status is expected on Tuesday, June 23, 2015 at 9:30 AM.
Bristol Skatepark is located at the intersection of Boulevard Patricio Peralta Ramos and Rivadavia Street, right across from the iconic Bristol Beach. This is a high-traffic area for both pedestrians and public transport vehicles. The zone is particularly busy during afternoons when hundreds of people use the bus stops to return home after enjoying the beach and nearby attractions.
Mar del Plata —often called "La Feliz" (The Happy One)— is Argentina's premier beach destination, attracting millions of domestic and international tourists each summer. The city center, where the accident occurred, is a bustling area filled with restaurants, shops, hotels, and entertainment venues along its famous coastal boulevard.
