According to sources from July 2, 2026, Sony announced that the Japanese company would stop manufacturing physical discs for all new PlayStation games starting in January 2028. Developers like iam8bit, Aeternum Game Studios, and GameFly reportedly reaffirmed their commitment to the physical format, citing reasons of video game preservation and culture. Meanwhile, players have expressed their views on social media under the hashtag #GamersUnidos (United Gamers), pointing out that exclusive digitalization might imply a loss of physical ownership, sparking a necessary and constructive conversation about digital rights and server dependence.
With this strategy, Sony would seek to align itself with the unstoppable growth of digital downloads and boost the role of its official store.
