In a country like Argentina, where strict currency exchange controls and high inflation make US dollars a highly coveted asset, finding massive amounts of undeclared cash in a politician's closet is a guaranteed massive scandal. This is exactly what happened to Martín Insaurralde, the former Mayor of Lomas de Zamora (a heavily populated district in Greater Buenos Aires) and former Chief of Cabinet for the Province of Buenos Aires.
Recently, Insaurralde filed a formal request before federal judge Luis Armella to prevent the use of a controversial video as evidence. The footage, recorded by his ex-wife, model and TV host Jesica Cirio, shows suitcases, bags, and drawers full of bundles of foreign currency in a closet at the Fincas San Vicente country club.
Insaurralde's lawyers argue that the audiovisual material has an illicit origin and therefore should be excluded from the case file. The investigation focuses on alleged money laundering and illicit enrichment by the former official.
The defense claims the footage originated from a hacking incident and criminal theft of Cirio's personal devices. They also suspect the material was edited and altered after being stolen. Consequently, they requested the application of the evidentiary exclusionary rule, arguing that the lack of a forensic chain of custody makes it impossible to certify the video's authenticity.
Following the public release of the video, the court ordered inspections and expert analysis at the property where the images were allegedly filmed. However, recent testimonies from Federal Police officers who participated in the 2023 raids have introduced doubts about the location.
Two officers stated they could not confirm if the closet in the video is the same one they searched. According to one policeman, the space shown in the video is narrow and has no windows, while the closet at the country club was spacious and featured frosted glass windows.
The investigation against Insaurralde—who served under Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof—deepened after a luxury trip he took to Marbella, Spain, in September 2023 alongside model Sofía Clerici. Prosecutor Sergio Mola has already requested the formal questioning of Insaurralde, his family members, and alleged frontmen linked to the scheme.
Although the judge rejected the detention requests for the main suspects, both Martín Insaurralde and Jesica Cirio are currently banned from leaving the country. The Justice system is awaiting the final results of a comprehensive accounting expert report on the defendants' assets.
Furthermore, Cirio's lawyer recently filed a complaint regarding an alleged extortion attempt at Prosecutor's Office No. 58 related to the case.
