A High-Stakes Heist Thwarted in Buenos Aires

A sophisticated criminal plot to rob a bank via an underground tunnel was dismantled by Argentine authorities, evoking memories of the country's most famous heist.

In a scene reminiscent of a Hollywood movie, the Buenos Aires Police (Policía Bonaerense) successfully dismantled a criminal organization attempting to rob a branch of Banco Provincia in the city of Baradero. The operation took place in the early hours of Sunday, June 14, 2026, resulting in the arrest of 12 individuals (11 men and 1 woman).

The raid was conducted by the Superintendency of Complex Crimes and the Grupo Halcón (Hawk Group), an elite tactical unit similar to a SWAT team. This preemptive strike prevented a potentially massive loss for the public bank, which is one of the most important financial institutions in the province.

What is a "Boquetero" Robbery?

The term boqueteros refers to criminals who specialize in entering buildings by breaking through walls, roofs, or floors—often by digging tunnels. This method allows thieves to bypass security systems at entry points. In Argentina, this technique gained notoriety following the famous Banco Río heist, where thieves dug a tunnel directly into the vault.

The Operation: A Workshop Underground

Police investigations had been tracking the group for 20 days. The criminals planned to strike during a long holiday weekend, hoping the deserted commercial center would buy them time. They occupied a vacant lot adjacent to the bank at the intersection of Fray Justo Santa María de Oro and Boedo streets.

When officers stormed the site, they discovered a fully operational underground workshop. The suspects had set up ventilation systems and lighting to facilitate their excavation. Authorities seized a significant arsenal of tools including drills, shovels, grinders, sledgehammers, and pincers.

Seized Items
  • 2 Pistols
  • 4 Cell phones
  • Drills & Grinders
  • 2 Trucks (Iveco Daily & Volkswagen)
Key Detail

Several detainees were found covered in mud, confirming their active role in the excavation.

A Connection to Infamy?

The presence of a Uruguayan citizen among the detainees has sparked comparisons to the 2006 Banco Río heist in Acassuso. That heist, considered the "robbery of the century" in Argentina, involved Uruguayan bandits who escaped through a tunnel with millions, leaving a note that read: "In a neighborhood of rich people, there are no guns, only money." While the current case was stopped before the theft, the international element suggests a transnational criminal network might be operating.
