This Monday, June 15, 2026, Argentina celebrates a national holiday in honor of General Martín Miguel de Güemes, a key figure in South American independence. While his actual anniversary falls on June 17, the government moved the observance to create a long weekend for citizens.
Martín Miguel de Güemes (1785-1821) was an Argentine military leader and politician from Salta, in northern Argentina. He commanded a famous cavalry unit called Los Infernales (The Infernal Ones), composed of skilled gauchos who defended the northern frontier against Spanish royalist invasions during the War of Independence. He remains the only Argentine general to die in combat during the independence wars, falling on June 17, 1821. His legacy as a defender of freedom is celebrated nationwide.
La Plata is the capital of Buenos Aires Province, located about 60 km southeast of Buenos Aires City. Known for its grid layout and diagonal avenues, it houses the iconic La Plata Cathedral and several universities.
