In an initiative blending historical tradition with social work, the Equinoterapia del Azul Foundation launched a new edition of its "Horses That Visit" program, designed to bring the legacy of General Martín Miguel de Güemes to those unable to participate in public ceremonies.
The event took place on Saturday, June 14, 2026 at Villa Las Rosas Penitentiary Unit No. 1, where horses entered specially adorned with traditional gaucho gear, saddlebags, Salta ponchos, and other characteristic elements, creating a space for reflection and learning among inmates.
Martín Miguel de Güemes (February 8, 1785 – June 17, 1821) was an Argentine military leader and politician, a hero of the Argentine War of Independence. As Governor of Salta from 1815, he organized the famous "Gauchos of Güemes" (Los Infernales), a cavalry unit that defended northern Argentina against seven royalist invasions between 1814 and 1821.
He is the only general killed in combat during Latin American independence wars. Wounded on June 7, 1821 in an ambush led by royalist commander José María Valdés at Quebrada de la Horqueta, he died ten days later on June 17, 1821. This Monday, June 15, 2026, Argentina observes a public holiday in his honor.
During the event, Retired General Alejandro Beberina, honorary member of the 5th Cavalry Regiment, delivered a talk on Güemes' life and legacy, highlighting values of patriotism, commitment, and service.
The tribute included performances of the Argentine National Anthem and a traditional zamba (a folkloric dance) dedicated to the Salta hero, creating a deeply emotional atmosphere reflecting love for the homeland, sacrifice, and solidarity.
Representatives from both foundations visit Villa Las Rosas monthly to strengthen community bonds and promote social reintegration for incarcerated individuals.
"We want our horses, accompanied by Güemes' gauchos, to also be messengers of our history and values. May General Martín Miguel de Güemes' legacy reach everyone, especially those who need it most."

Salta ponchos are traditional wool garments from northern Argentina, featuring distinctive earth-tone patterns. Gaucho gear (aperos) includes saddlebags, reins, and other equipment used by Argentine cowboys for horseback riding.
