A set of photographs that allegedly show Shakira alongside Mexican actor Manuel García-Rulfo in Los Angeles have started circulating on social media, sparking speculation about a possible romance between the two artists. As these images go viral, many users wonder how to distinguish whether they are authentic or if they were manipulated or generated by artificial intelligence.

What Do the Photos Show?

The images, initially spread by the Instagram account Deuxmoi (a popular celebrity gossip account with millions of followers), reportedly show Shakira and García-Rulfo sharing an evening at a Los Angeles hotel. In some of the photographs, they appear very close, fueling rumors of a possible romantic relationship.

However, as of now, neither of the artists' representatives has issued an official confirmation about the alleged romance. Shakira had previously stated that her priority was raising her children after her separation from former Spanish footballer Gerard Piqué in 2022.

Who is Manuel García-Rulfo?

For those unfamiliar with Latin American entertainment, Manuel García-Rulfo is a 45-year-old Mexican actor who has gained international recognition for starring in the Netflix series The Lincoln Lawyer (2022-present). He has also appeared in major Hollywood films such as The Magnificent Seven (2016), Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Death on the Nile (2022), and Pedro Páramo (2024).

He is the great-nephew of the celebrated Mexican writer Juan Rulfo, author of the iconic novel Pedro Páramo, considered one of the most important works of Latin American literature.

Until 2026, he was romantically linked to Audrey McGraw, daughter of famous American country singer Tim McGraw.

Google Tools to Verify Images

Google Lens: Reverse Image Search

Google Lens is a tool integrated into the Chrome browser and available as a mobile app that allows users to perform a reverse image search. Users can upload a photo or paste its URL, and the system tracks on which other websites that image appears, when it was first published, and whether there are previous versions or different contexts.

How to use it:

  • On Chrome for computer: right-click on the image and select "Search image with Google Lens".
  • On mobile devices: press and hold the photograph on any webpage.

"About This Image": Metadata and Origin

The "About This Image" function, accessible from Google Images by clicking the three dots over any visual result, goes beyond reverse search. This tool examines the file's metadata, which records data about creation date, device used, and author.

Among the metadata, it can indicate whether the image was generated with artificial intelligence tools, including the digital watermark that Google incorporates into images produced with its own AI systems.

The function also verifies if the file contains credentials from the C2PA standard (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity), a consortium formed by companies like Adobe, Microsoft, OpenAI, Amazon, and Intel, which records in encrypted form the origin and editing history of an image.

YouTube and AI Content Identification

YouTube incorporated a label system to identify videos created with artificial intelligence that combines three types of signals:

1. Internal algorithms:
Evaluate if the video contains photorealistic AI-generated material in significant proportion.
2. SynthID:
Imperceptible watermark technology developed by Google DeepMind that embeds into pixel data and survives compressions, crops, and color adjustments.
3. C2PA metadata:
Cryptographic record of file origin, tool used, and editing history.

Since May 2026, companies like OpenAI, Nvidia, Kakao, and ElevenLabs have also adopted the SynthID standard.

Recommendation for Users

When faced with any viral image that raises doubts, it is recommended to use these verification tools before sharing. In the case of the photos of Shakira and Manuel García-Rulfo, there is no official confirmation and the images should be analyzed with the mentioned tools to determine their authenticity.
