The Czech Republic and South Africa battled to a 1-1 draw at the iconic Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, in the second round of Group A at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The result keeps both teams alive, though with mixed emotions: the Central Europeans left with a bittersweet feeling after controlling much of the match, while the Africans celebrated the point as a hard-fought achievement.
The team coached by Miroslav Koubek started brilliantly. Just six minutes in, an elaborate attacking move left Michal Sadilek with the ball inside the box. The midfielder controlled, turned, and fired a powerful shot that deflected off Mbekezeli Mbokazi and found the back of the net. Goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had no chance.
That early goal gave the Czechs a false sense of security. Vladimír Coufal threw in from the sideline, finding Adam Hlozek, who laid it back for Alexandr Sojka to assist Sadilek. The Czech midfield controlled possession with technical players like Vladimir Darida and Lukas Cerv, but they gradually conceded ground and possession to a South African side that grew stronger as the match progressed.
The Bafana Bafana (South Africa's national team nickname, meaning "The Boys") took time to find their rhythm but never lost faith. Oswin Appollis tested from distance with a shot that went wide, followed by a golden opportunity when a cross sailed across the box without Iqraam Rayners managing a clean connection in front of goalkeeper Matej Kovar.
In the second half, South Africa pushed forward. Teboho Mokoena, who was visibly moved during the national anthem, tested from distance several times. The match turned dramatically in the 82nd minute when a handball by Pavel Sulc inside the box was spotted by referee Tori Penso and confirmed by VAR.
The equalizer awakened South Africa and made the Czech Republic nervous. Kovar had to intervene to stop a shot from Relebohile Mofokeng. In stoppage time, the Europeans pushed for a winner through set pieces but lacked clarity. Lukas Provod came close with a curling effort, while Evidence Makgopa and Thapelo Modiba also had chances to complete the African comeback.
Starting XI: Kovar; Hranac, Holes, Krejci, Coufal; Sadilek (Soucek, 67'), Darida (Sulc, 55'), Cerv (Zima, 78'), Sojka (Zeleny, 55'); Hlozek (Provod, 67'), Schick.

Group A will be decided in the final matchday. The draw benefits both teams if they win their respective matches: the Czech Republic will face Mexico, while South Africa takes on South Korea. The winner of the Mexico vs South Korea match will have one foot in the next round.
