The accident occurred at the intersection of Provincial Route 14 and National Route 35, in Bajo Giuliano.
Four women lost their lives after becoming trapped in a SUV that fell into a lagoon in La Pampa. The tragedy happened when the vehicle, a Ford EcoSport, was traveling from 25 de Mayo towards Santa Rosa to visit a family member hospitalized at the Favaloro Hospital.
The incident took place in Bajo Giuliano, a natural depression about 10 kilometers south of Santa Rosa. After heavy rains, this area accumulates water, forming a lagoon. Initial theories suggest the driver did not notice the end of the road or failed to brake in time in an unlit section.
The intersection of both routes forms a 'T' shape. The SUV went through the road, over the guardrail, and ended up submerged in water that was at 3 °C.
The driver managed to get out of the submerged vehicle on her own and was the one who alerted rescuers that four other people were inside. She was assisted by the Medical Emergency Service (SEM) and taken to a health center in a state of shock.
The rescue operation included La Pampa Police, Firefighters, and SEM personnel, who faced challenges due to the water depth and difficult access. Traffic on National Route 35 was partially restricted for several hours.
All victims were women from 25 de Mayo, La Pampa. Authorities have decided to keep their identities confidential until the investigation is complete and family members are notified.
The remains of the women will be waked at the SUM of their hometown.
Bajo Giuliani is a natural depression that collects water after periods of rain, forming a lagoon. The area also hosts a wastewater treatment plant for the Pampas capital.
Lack of lighting in the sector has been pointed out as a factor that may have contributed to the accident.
This accident follows another one that occurred last Friday on National Route 9, near Baradero, where a Fiat Siena carrying four people fell into the Cañada Honda stream.
In that crash, three people died: a woman, an elderly man, and a one-year-old baby, all residents of Victoria, Entre Ríos. The sole survivor managed to exit the vehicle on their own and was urgently taken to a hospital.
The causes of both accidents remain under investigation.
