The feature millions have been waiting for has finally arrived: WhatsApp has enabled username reservations, a transformation that keeps your phone number hidden when communicating with new contacts or joining groups.
Global rollout began on June 30, 2026, representing one of the most significant changes in the platform's history under Meta ownership. According to Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp's VP of Product, the feature is now available to users worldwide.
A unique identifier starting with the @ symbol, similar to platforms like Instagram or Telegram. Its main purpose is offering an alternative to your phone number so others can contact you.
Key characteristics:
Your phone number is extremely sensitive personal data, linked to bank accounts, social media, and everyday services. Sharing it with strangers in groups or conversations can expose users to spam, scams, or harassment.
With this new feature, simply share your username to let someone send messages or make calls, without revealing your personal phone number.
"Sometimes you just want to chat without giving out your number," Meta stated regarding interactions with new colleagues or neighbors.
Update WhatsApp
Ensure you have the latest version installed from your app store.
Go to Settings
Open the settings menu from the three dots (Android) or settings icon (iPhone).
Select Account
Enter the account section and choose "Username".
Enter and Reserve
Type your desired identifier and confirm the reservation.
To prevent harassment and unwanted contacts, WhatsApp added an extra protection layer: the option to configure a four-digit PIN code.
Anyone wishing to start a conversation must know both the exact username and this additional code, making unwanted contact more difficult.
Note: Names of public figures like Lionel Messi (Argentine soccer legend) have been preventively blocked to avoid scams and identity impersonation.
