A Moving Farewell

The band Los Abuelos de la Nada ("The Grandparents of Nothing" in English - a legendary Argentine rock band) posted an emotional statement on July 1, 2026 to bid farewell to Daniel Melingo, who passed away on June 30, 2026 at 68 years old at his home in Chacarita, a traditional neighborhood in Buenos Aires.

The message, accompanied by a historic photo from the early 1980s, read: "Today we say goodbye with deep sadness to Daniel Melingo, beloved musician, immense artist, and fundamental part of the history of Los Abuelos de la Nada."

Melingo's Legacy in the Band

Daniel Melingo was part of Los Abuelos de la Nada during their most iconic era, alongside legends like Miguel Abuelo (founder and vocalist), Andrés Calamaro (keyboardist and future solo star), Cachorro López (bassist and renowned producer), Gustavo Bazterrica (guitarist), and Polo Corbella (drummer).

He participated in the first two studio albums:

  • Los Abuelos de la Nada (1982) - self-titled debut album
  • Vasos y besos ("Glasses and Kisses", 1983) - featuring "Chalaman", composed by Melingo

The Golden Age Hits

During that era, the band produced some of the most emblematic songs in Argentine rock history:

🎵 Sin gamulán ("Without a worry")
🎵 Mil horas ("A thousand hours")
🎵 Sintonía americana ("American tuning")
🎵 Así es el calor ("That's how the heat is")
🎵 Himno de mi corazón ("Anthem of my heart")
🎵 Lunes por la madrugada ("Monday at dawn")

The Complete Message

"His talent, sensitivity, and creative contribution left an indelible mark on an essential stage of our band and in Argentine music. He was a free spirit, a unique artist, capable of building his own universe that transcended generations. Thank you, Daniel, for your music, for your art, and for being part of this unforgettable journey that continues to live in every song."

A Multifaceted Career

Daniel Melingo was born in 1958 and developed a career spanning more than four decades in Argentine music. He was co-founder of Los Twist in 1982 alongside Pipo Cipolatti, a band known for their humorous and irreverent style. He was also part of the band that accompanied Charly García (one of Argentina's most influential rock musicians) during the Piano Bar era.

In recent years, he became a reference point for contemporary tango, developing a unique style that fused rock elements with traditional tango music. He was scheduled to present "Tangos bajos (Rework)" on September 21, 2026 at the Teatro Coliseo, a historic venue in Buenos Aires.
