Winter Break in Córdoba: A Perfect Family Getaway in Argentina

July marks the beginning of the winter school holidays in Argentina. The province of Córdoba, located in the country's geographical center, is famous for its stunning mountain ranges known as the Sierras. This year, the region is preparing to welcome thousands of tourists seeking rest, adventure, and culture.

While some locals might stay home to watch the Football World Cup, the decrease in outbound international travel points to a great outlook for domestic tourism. Cordobeses start their winter break this weekend, while visitors from Buenos Aires will join during the second half of July, when the highest influx is expected.

A Sporting Kickoff: Rugby Passion

On Saturday, July 4, the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium (Córdoba's main sports arena) will host an exciting rugby match between Argentina and Scotland. It is estimated that around 18,000 tourists from other provinces will arrive in the capital and nearby cities like Villa Carlos Paz (the region's premier tourist hub), generating high hotel occupancy to start the month with a bang.

A Calendar Packed with Festivals

July will be full of events for all tastes. Highlights include the National Skydiving Championship in Alta Gracia, the National Alpine Chocolate Festival in Villa General Belgrano (a town with strong German heritage), and the National Tango Festival in La Falda. From July 9 to 12, the town of Nono will host the challenging Ultra Trail mountain race.

Other notable events include the Artisan Knitting Festival in Capilla del Monte, the National Bagna Cauda Festival in Calchín Oeste (celebrating a traditional hot garlic and anchovy dip brought by Italian immigrants), and the Reunion Festival in Mina Clavero.

Expectations Across the Mountains

Villa Carlos Paz and La Cumbre

In Villa Carlos Paz, there is optimism as last-minute reservations are activating quickly, keeping rates similar to the summer season, with minor increases of 5 to 10 percent. In La Cumbre, bookings are high, especially for the long weekend of July 9 to 12.

Mina Clavero and Traslasierra Valley

Mina Clavero reports a 30% booking rate for the first half of the month, with the highest expectations placed on the second half. In the Traslasierra Valley, accommodation capacity decreases by about 30% in winter due to the lack of natural gas in some areas, but local businesses are maintaining hope with attractive promotions combining lodging and gastronomy.

Calamuchita Valley and La Cumbrecita

In Villa General Belgrano, average reservations hover around 50% for the first half of July, jumping to 75% during the July 9 holiday weekend. In La Cumbrecita—a famous pedestrian-only alpine-style village and one of the winter's star destinations—reservations are at 50%, with peaks of 70% for the long weekend.

Córdoba City: A Winter Boom

The provincial capital typically performs better in tourism during winter than in summer. With a program offering exclusive discounts at hotels, restaurants, and shops, the city invites visitors to enjoy its rich cultural agenda.

Highlights include the guided tour Remembering the Founder, commemorating the city's founding anniversary, and the Cuarteto Experience. 'Cuarteto' is a joyful and iconic local music genre, and the experience includes a tour through the Cuarteto Museum, the Walk of Fame, and the historic Bar Bon que Bon. A perfect opportunity for family fun!
