Kicillof Stands Firm Against Kirchnerism

The governor of the Province of Buenos Aires (Argentina's largest and most populous district), Axel Kicillof, held a political summit this Thursday, July 2, 2026, in the city of La Plata alongside about 60 leaders from his internal faction, the Right to the Future Movement (MDF, by its Spanish acronym). In the meeting, attended by mayors, legislators, and national deputies of his faction, the governor was clear regarding the electoral strategy towards the 2027 presidential elections: 'There is no submission, we go to PASO or internal primaries'.

Internal Tensions within Peronism

Kicillof's declaration comes in a context of friction with Kirchnerism (the left-wing faction of Peronism led by former President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner), specifically with La Cámpora (the movement's youth wing), which seeks to impose conditions to support his eventual presidential candidacy. In this scenario, Cristina Kirchner reportedly stated that Kicillof is not her candidate, which has prompted a strategic review within Kirchnerism.

'There will be no unity with conditions,' Kicillof affirmed before his leaders, making it clear that Peronism must move forward through an internal election or the PASO (Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory Primaries, a unique Argentine electoral mechanism where candidates compete within their own coalitions before the general election), in case the government of Javier Milei eliminates this electoral tool.

The governor avoided directly confronting the recent criticisms from Máximo Kirchner (Cristina's son and a key legislator), who at a rally in Parque Lezama had questioned that those who speak of unity 'are not even capable of going to see Cristina' and pointed out that he does not want 'default candidates.' Kicillof instructed his allies not to respond to provocations and to focus on the people's needs. 'Our movement was born with the conviction that, to defend our people and propose an alternative path, we must make the effort to build something new,' he stated.

Kirchnerism's Strategy

While Kicillof seeks to legitimize his candidacy through internal competition, Kirchnerism is evaluating how to dodge that scenario. Their plan would consist of launching Cristina Kirchner as the first candidate on a list, forcing the electoral justice to explicitly issue her disqualification (she currently faces legal convictions that could prevent her from running). This would grant enormous centrality to the former president, who would appear on campaign posters and on the Single Paper Ballot (the official voting system used in Argentina).

Under this scheme, the unknown lies in who would accompany the former president as a vice-presidential candidate. Sources consulted indicate that two historical figures of the movement are being considered: Mariano Recalde and Wado De Pedro.

National Political and Economic Context

Kicillof's actions gain relevance in a national framework where the ruling party has recently undergone changes. Following the resignation of Manuel Adorni as Chief of Cabinet on June 27, 2026, Diego Santilli assumed the role on June 30, 2026, reducing the cabinet to 8 ministries. The Milei administration celebrates macroeconomic indicators, with the official exchange rate at 1,510 ARS per USD, the 'blue dollar' (parallel exchange rate) at 1,525 ARS, and reserves exceeding USD 48 billion. However, analysts note that these figures have not yet translated into tangible improvements for a large portion of the population's pockets, which could influence the polarization scenario that Kicillof is aiming for heading into 2027.
