In the early hours of July 5, 2026, a road accident shocked the small town of Margarita Belén, located in the province of Chaco, northern Argentina. An 18-year-old footballer lost his life following a collision between the motorcycle he was riding and a car.
The incident occurred around 3:45 AM at kilometer 1024 on National Route 11. The victim was identified as Jeremías Lucas Correa, a resident of Colonia Benítez and a prominent member of the youth divisions of Club Atlético Central Benítez, a local sports institution.
According to local media reports, the Honda Titan motorcycle carrying Correa and another 18-year-old identified by the initials M.J.B. collided with a Volkswagen Gol car. The car was driven by a 21-year-old man residing in Margarita Belén.
Health personnel who arrived at the scene confirmed Jeremías's death at the site. Meanwhile, his companion M.J.B. suffered multiple fractures and trauma, being urgently transferred to the Hospital Perrando in Resistencia (the capital city of Chaco province), where he remained hospitalized in stable condition.
The driver of the Volkswagen Gol also suffered various injuries from the impact. Due to the characteristics of the accident, and by order of the duty Prosecutor's Office, the young driver was apprehended and charged with the alleged crime of culpable homicide in a traffic accident (known locally as 'homicidio culposo').
Forensic experts worked at the scene conducting the necessary investigations, and both vehicles were seized. Jeremías's body was transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine and Sciences (IMCiF).
The news of the young athlete's passing caused deep sorrow in his club. Through its social media, Club Atlético Central Benítez issued a farewell message:
With deep sorrow, we say goodbye to our player Jeremías Correa, a son of our youth academy who defended our colors with the strength that characterized him.
The institution also accompanied the footballer's family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time, joining the numerous expressions of affection and condolences that emerged throughout the region.
This unfortunate event reinforces the need to take extreme precautions when driving, especially during the early morning hours and on highways. Wearing helmets and respecting speed limits and traffic signs are fundamental to preventing tragedies.
