Paraguayan Justice Nears Verdict for Former Senator Kueider

13/07/2026 16:00 - Judiciales

The Final Stretch for Edgardo Kueider in Paraguay

The Specialized Court in Asunción prepares to potentially deliver its ruling on Monday, July 13, 2026.

Edgardo Kueider, a former Argentine senator, and his partner Iara Guinsel, have been waiting for a judicial resolution that could be announced this coming Monday, July 13, 2026. The Specialized Court for Economic and Anticorruption Crimes of Asunción is set to evaluate their case regarding attempted smuggling.

The saga began on December 4, 2024. Kueider and Guinsel were intercepted and detained at the bustling border crossing between Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) and Ciudad del Este (Paraguay)—one of South America's most active commercial hubs. In their possession, authorities found over $200,000 in US dollars, alongside Paraguayan Guaraníes and Argentine Pesos, none of which had been declared to customs, a serious offense known locally as 'tentativa de contrabando' (attempted smuggling).

The Prosecutor's Request

The Paraguayan prosecution has requested a prison sentence of 2 years and 2 months for the defendants. It is worth noting that the maximum penalty for this crime in its attempted form is two and a half years. For the past year and a half, the former senator and his partner have been under house arrest in Paraguay, awaiting this crucial step in the legal process.

A Web of Cases Across Borders

Kueider's legal challenges extend beyond Paraguay. In his native Argentina, he faces prosecution for alleged money laundering—specifically linked to the purchase of six luxury apartments in Asunción—and illicit enrichment in cases spanning the cities of Concordia and San Isidro.

While the Paraguayan government has already approved his extradition to Argentina, his physical transfer depends on the final decision of the Argentine Supreme Court of Justice. This international cooperation marks a hopeful step forward in regional justice, showing that borders are no barrier to transparency.
