Ukraine Launches Over 400 Drones Against Moscow Amid Political Tensions

20/07/2026 10:43 - Internacionales

A Large-Scale Strike on the Russian Capital

Published on July 20, 2026

According to local authorities and international media, Ukraine reportedly executed an unprecedented offensive in the early hours of July 20, 2026, launching more than 400 drones towards the city of Moscow, the capital of Russia. The mayor of the Russian capital, Sergei Sobyanin, detailed that most of the devices were shot down before reaching their target, although 85 drones were intercepted in the vicinity of the city.

The head of the Moscow region, Andrei Vorobyov, reported that 10 people were injured as a result of the impacts, with several residential and civilian infrastructure buildings suffering damage. Additionally, a fire was recorded at the Yuzhnye Vrata industrial park, located about 30 kilometers (approximately 18 miles) south of Moscow. Meanwhile, the news outlet Astra indicated that another fire might have affected an oil depot in Podolsk, 20 kilometers (about 12 miles) from the capital, information that has not yet been officially confirmed.

Search for Dialogue and Political Crisis in Kyiv

While the battlefront intensifies, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is navigating a tense internal scenario. Recent changes in his cabinet sparked street protests following the dismissal of the Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, aged 35.

The population has shown discontent, expressing support for Fedorov and rejection of General Oleksandr Syrskyi, aged 60, who remains in command of the armed forces. With the hope of calming spirits and finding a strategic way out, Zelenskyy announced he would hold key conversations to resolve the crisis, keeping the hope for peace alive.

Retaliation and Conflict Context

The Ukrainian attack comes hours after Russia bombed Kyiv (the Ukrainian capital) and other localities with ballistic missiles, a cycle of retaliation that complicates peace agreements. On Sunday, these attacks left a toll of at least six dead and dozens wounded on Ukrainian territory.

According to the Institute for the Study of War, Russia would have increased its offensive capacity, launching more ballistic missiles in July than in any other recent month. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported an attack on the port of Odesa, a crucial city in southern Ukraine, using two missiles and 94 drones, of which Ukrainian air defenses successfully intercepted 81, demonstrating strong defensive resilience.
