According to CNN Español, on July 21, 2026, Houthi rebels from Yemen announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabian transport in the Red Sea. This action aims to close the Bab el-Mandeb strait, whose name translates to 'Gate of Tears', a mandatory transit point connecting Europe and Asia through the Suez Canal.
With barely 29 kilometers wide at its narrowest point, this maritime route is crucial: nearly 15% of global maritime trade passes through it. Previous disruptions in this area (between 2023 and 2025) cost the sector approximately 20 billion dollars annually, according to estimates compiled by the international network.
The Houthi movement, or Ansar Allah (Supporters of God), emerged in the 1990s led by Hussein al-Houthi. It represents the Zaidi Shia sub-sect, which ruled Yemen for centuries. After taking the capital, Sanaa, in 2014, the group has the backing of Iran, which has supplied them with technology and weaponry, integrating them into the so-called 'Axis of Resistance'.
The international community has reacted swiftly to ensure safety in international waters and prevent the disruption of global supply chains. US President Donald Trump stated on July 21, 2026, that his country would take action if the Houthis fulfilled their threat. 'So far it hasn't happened. It could happen, but we will take care of the matter,' he declared during a meeting at the White House, as reported by La Prensa.
For its part, on July 22, 2026, the Pakistani government issued a similar warning. According to the EFE agency and published by Infobae, Islamabad reserves 'the right to use military force' against any aggression towards its vessels or maritime interests in the Red Sea. Furthermore, Pakistan came to the defense of Saudi Arabia, recalling the Mutual Defense Strategic Agreement signed in September 2025, which considers any aggression against either country as an aggression against both.
The threat to the Bab el-Mandeb strait, a key route for Saudi Arabia—the world's largest crude oil exporter—has caused movements in energy markets. Following the Houthi announcement, the price of oil exceeded 90 dollars per barrel. As of the economic context on July 21, 2026, Brent crude closed at 91.01 dollars and WTI at 84.91 dollars, marking its fourth consecutive increase.
Despite the tension, joint actions by powers and international mediators, such as Pakistan, seek to maintain stability and defuse the conflict, sending a clear message that free navigation and global trade will be safeguarded.
Houthi announcement date: July 21, 2026
Location: Bab el-Mandeb Strait (Red Sea)
Affected trade: 15% of global maritime trade
Brent Oil: 91.01 USD (07/21/2026)
Saudi Arabia's allies: US and Pakistan
The Houthi escalation occurs within the framework of the armed conflict between the US and Iran, where Pakistan has acted as the main mediator. The diplomatic goal is to prevent the tension in the Red Sea from spreading to other vital routes, such as the Strait of Hormuz.
