Mendoza, one of Argentina's most important wine-producing provinces located at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, is experiencing an intense polar wave. The National Weather Service (SMN) issued an orange alert for snowfall accumulation between 5 and 10 centimeters, winds reaching 100 km/h (about 62 mph), and temperatures dropping to -5°C (23°F) in some areas.
The General Directorate of Schools (DGE) confirmed the suspension of in-person classes for the morning shift on Thursday, July 2nd, across all educational levels (both public and private) in the following areas:
(Administrative divisions similar to counties)
(Mountain towns and tourist spots)
Snowflakes began falling during the morning of Wednesday, July 1st, in locations such as Manzano Histórico, Gualtallary (a premium wine region), and Tupungato. As the day progressed, the snowfall extended to the southern part of the province, covering downtown Malargüe and areas of San Rafael like El Toledano, near the airport.
Even Greater Mendoza registered snowfall, although with less intensity and without accumulation on the ground. Social media users shared images and videos of this unusual weather phenomenon in a region known for its sunny vineyards.

The orange alert from Argentina's National Weather Service indicates a level of significant risk, associated with weather phenomena that can cause important damage if precautions are not taken. Unlike a yellow alert, it implies a high probability of direct impact on the population, infrastructure, and daily activities.
Mendoza is Argentina's fourth largest province and the heart of the country's wine industry. Located in western Argentina at the foothills of the Andes Mountains, it borders Chile to the west. The province is known for its Malbec wines, the Aconcagua mountain (the highest peak outside Asia at 6,962 meters), and its dry, sunny climate - making this snowfall event particularly unusual and noteworthy for locals and visitors.
