The administration of Javier Milei has taken a pragmatic turn in its political strategy ahead of the 2027 elections. In a move that contrasts with his initial anti-establishment ('casta') discourse, the ruling party seeks to revive listas colectoras and eliminate the PASO, a classic electoral tactic in Argentina.
For our international readers: 'Listas colectoras' are an electoral mechanism that allows a presidential candidate to include candidates from other political spaces or provinces on their same ballot. This tool, eliminated in 2019 during Mauricio Macri's government, facilitated the formation of broad fronts. Now, Milei's government seeks to readapt this format to the Single Paper Ballot (BUP) to add governors and strategic allies.
The key piece in this new board is Diego Santilli, who assumed as Cabinet Chief on June 30, 2026, replacing Manuel Adorni (who resigned on June 27, 2026). Santilli, a politician with vast experience, leads negotiations with governors to agree on the electoral reform before September 2026.
This political shift comes at a time of economic optimism. Minister Luis Caputo presented the 2026/2027 financial plan, with a cushion of USD 3.7 billion for this year. Additionally, the country risk dropped to its lowest since 2018 and BCRA reserves exceeded USD 49 billion.
Amidst this strategy, Javier Milei travels to Tucumán on July 8, 2026 to participate in the vigil of July 9th. There, he is expected to meet with Vice President Victoria Villarruel, in an attempt to show unity for the second half of the year.
