Neurologist Dr. Conrado Estol (a leading Argentine brain specialist) stated that society is experiencing a historic shift in human life expectancy, where the focus must shift from mere longevity to the quality of those years. In an interview with LA NACIÓN (one of Argentina's most prestigious newspapers), the specialist explained that young people and adults under 50 should adopt a preventive mindset, as reaching 90 or 100 years in full physical and cognitive capacity is a real possibility if certain wellness pillars are met from early stages.
"What matters is the number corresponding to your chronological age? There are people at 30 who could say they're old, as if using outdated terms," Estol questioned, advocating for abandoning the traditional concept of old age.
Managing emotions and stressful situations is fundamental for preserving mental and physical health.
Active and meaningful interpersonal relationships are a pillar of emotional wellbeing.
Adequate rest is essential for cellular repair and memory consolidation.
Eliminating tobacco is one of the most impactful changes for improving life expectancy and quality.
Responsible consumption or abstinence protects the brain and other vital organs.
A balanced diet provides necessary nutrients for optimal body function.
Regular physical activity is key for maintaining mobility, strength, and cardiovascular health.
The expert warns that currently two-thirds of people spend their final ten years of life in poor health conditions, which he defines as "the lost decade". "Two-thirds of people reach and spend their last 10 years of life in poor or very poor health," Estol explained, citing the reality observed in his medical practice.
To reverse this situation, the neurologist emphasized that the key to fulfilling longevity lies not in magic solutions, but in the systematic adoption of the seven healthy habit pillars.
"To keep the mind active at 80, you need to do the same as at 40: maintain optimism, have a positive vision, and a life purpose," Estol explained.
For any memory doubts or failures, early consultation with professionals is fundamental, just as with other health aspects. "You not only need to do your homework with these healthy lifestyle habits I mentioned, but you also need professional accompaniment. Alone is very difficult," he emphasized.
In another article published on June 15, 2026, the same specialist emphasized mental health management: "If anxiety cannot be controlled with habits, consult a professional; there's no need to fear properly prescribed medication."
Precision medicine will allow individualized accompaniment throughout the decades, adapting recommendations to each person.
Estol warned against the stigma of early retirement and passivity. Contrary to popular belief, he pointed out that most successful businesses are started by people over 60.
"You shouldn't say, I'm 75, let me see what I do, I'll watch soap operas all afternoon. No. You need to stay active," the specialist emphasized, highlighting the importance of maintaining a life purpose at any age.
Aging is a continuous process that begins to be managed from age 30. "Until 30 we age very slowly, and little. The slope of decline is minimal, then it accentuates, but it starts very young, not at 75," Estol concluded. Prioritizing metabolic and cardiovascular health from early adulthood is fundamental for a fulfilling old age.
