On July 5, 2026, FIFA announced a measure that shook the soccer world: the suspension of a one-match ban on United States forward Folarin Balogun (25 years old). This decision allows him to be on the pitch for the crucial Round of 16 clash against Belgium, scheduled for July 6 as part of the 2026 World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the US, Mexico, and Canada.
The trigger for this unusual resolution was a phone call from the President of the United States, Donald Trump, to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. The reason for the presidential intervention was to request a review of the direct red card Balogun received in the 64th minute during the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended in a 2-0 victory for the Americans in the Round of 32.
Balogun's clearance was celebrated by the US coaching staff, led by Argentine manager Mauricio Pochettino. The attacker is fundamental to the tactical scheme, as he is the current top scorer for the North American side in the tournament with 3 goals. His presence in the attack brings power and finishing ability ahead of the challenge against the Europeans.
The measure did not sit well with the opposition. The Belgian federation and their coach, Rudi Garcia, harshly criticized FIFA's decision, calling it incomprehensible and unjustifiable. They believe that political intervention by a head of state in a sporting disciplinary matter sets a dangerous precedent for the competitive fairness of the tournament.
It is worth noting that there is a similar precedent in international soccer: Cristiano Ronaldo benefited from an equivalent resolution in November, although under different circumstances and contexts.
