Back to School in Mendoza: Roadworks on Main Highways Require Travel Planning

20/07/2026 10:00 - Actualidad

A Temporary Effort for a More Connected Mendoza

Mendoza, the beautiful wine-producing province located at the foothills of the Andes in western Argentina, is gearing up for a busy week. After the traditional July winter break, Monday, July 20, 2026 marks the return to classrooms and the resumption of urban routines. With students back in school, local authorities anticipate a significant increase in traffic flow, requiring dynamic road coexistence in areas where major infrastructure improvements are underway.

While the construction work implies some additional waiting times, the final result will bring safer and more fluid mobility for everyone in Greater Mendoza. The government recommends leaving early and planning routes ahead of time, assuring residents that there will be no total road closures during peak school hours.

South Access: Estimated delays of 10 to 20 minutes

For those traveling from the southern part of the province, complications will be concentrated between Azcuenaga and Anchorena streets (south/north direction) and between Paso and Boedo streets (north/south direction).

This sector is undergoing a massive expansion that includes:

  • ✔️ Construction of a third traffic lane.
  • ✔️ Complete repaving of the route.
  • ✔️ Building of three new bridges.

Authorities guarantee the permanence of two lanes open in each direction, although traffic must proceed at reduced speeds due to the presence of heavy machinery.

East Access: Estimated delays of 30 to 40 minutes

Those entering from the eastern departments (such as Maipú and Guaymallén, key agricultural areas in Greater Mendoza) should pay close attention. Interventions begin at Lamadrid street in Maipú and extend to Tirasso street in Guaymallén.

This is a deep refurbishment spanning almost 20 kilometers (about 12.4 miles), which is progressing dynamically ahead of the original schedule thanks to favorable weather conditions. The work includes:

  • 🚧 Strategic detours with two-way traffic sections.
  • 🚗 Traffic channelizations that vary according to the construction phase.

Regular commuters are advised to pay special attention to signage and use real-time navigation apps to choose the best alternative routes.
