Argentine Government Eliminates Ministry of Interior: Santilli Takes Over

03/07/2026 09:04 - Politica

A Strategic Reorganization for Argentina

President Javier Milei has taken a significant step in restructuring his cabinet by publishing Decree 571/2026 (known in Argentina as DNU, a Decree of Necessity and Urgency) in the Official Gazette. This measure officially eliminates the Ministry of the Interior, transferring its functions to the Chief of Cabinet of Ministers, now led by Diego Santilli.

For context, the Ministry of the Interior was traditionally responsible for managing the political relationship between the federal government and Argentina's 23 provinces, plus the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires (CABA). This change comes just days after Santilli assumed his new role on June 30, 2026, following the resignation of Manuel Adorni on June 27, 2026.

What Are Santilli's New Responsibilities?

With this reform, the Chief of Cabinet assumes a leading role in federal relations. The transferred responsibilities include:

  • Direct relations with provincial governors and mayors.
  • Coordination of the electoral system and political parties.
  • Supervision of Renaper (the National Registry of Persons, which issues national ID cards) and policies in border areas.
  • Management of issues related to tourism, environment, sports, science, and technology.

The Executive Branch stated that the modification was made for management reasons and is unpostponable for government management, projecting a horizon of greater efficiency and agility in decision-making.

New Positions to Assist the Cabinet

To support this new structure, two new Secretary-level positions were created:

Guillermo Ignacio Devitt was appointed as Deputy Chief of Cabinet (Decree 574/2026), coming from the Secretariat of Strategic Affairs.

Gustavo Javier Coria assumed as Deputy Chief of Cabinet of the Interior (Decree 575/2026), who previously served as Secretary of the Interior in the dissolved ministry.

The Cabinet is Reduced to 8 Ministries

With this modification, the national organizational chart now consists of the following portfolios:

  1. Foreign Relations
  2. Defense
  3. Economy
  4. Justice
  5. National Security
  6. Health
  7. Human Capital
  8. Deregulation and State Transformation
