On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the Argentine National Team achieved a historic comeback by defeating Egypt 3-2 in Atlanta, advancing to the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup. The triumph unleashed collective euphoria across the country, with thousands gathering in public squares and city centers to celebrate. However, amidst the overflowing joy, isolated incidents were quickly controlled by security forces.
In the capital of the central province of Córdoba, thousands of fans gathered around the Patio Olmos shopping mall. According to sources from the local media La Voz, a total of 42 arrests were made for theft, fights, and aggressions against the police.
The most notable incident was an attempted looting of a jewelry store on Vélez Sársfield street, where a group of youths broke the storefront windows. Neighbors, from the balconies of surrounding buildings, reacted with desperate shouts of "Police, police!" to try to stop the criminals.
The Minister of Security of Córdoba, Juan Pablo Quinteros, condemned the events and praised the police and neighborhood action: "It is outrageous to see how people who were walking by took advantage of what two or three vandals did and turned into criminals stealing things."
In the northern province of Tucumán, celebrations concentrated in Plaza Independencia, just meters from the Government House, where this Wednesday the events for the 210th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence will take place. According to reports from the newspaper La Gaceta, a group of people began to cause disturbances, attacking officers with glass bottles and other objects.
As a result of the aggression, two police officers were injured (a chief officer and a subordinate). The Infantry Police intervened immediately, forming a containment line with shields to protect both the uniformed officers and peaceful revelers, managing to apprehend several of the attackers.
The preventive operation, integrated by various units such as Urban District I and Capital Infantry, managed to restore order and guarantee the security of the sector for the upcoming official ceremonies.
Despite these attempts to tarnish the day, the festive spirit and community union shone throughout the country. The rapid response from authorities and citizens' rejection of crime demonstrated that peace and collective enjoyment prevail over isolated acts of vandalism. Come on Argentina, now for the quarter-finals!
