On the weekend of June 28 and 29, 2026, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Seychelles—an archipelagic island country in the Indian Ocean known for its pristine beaches and strategic maritime location. He was welcomed by President Patrick Herminie, who bestowed upon him the 'Guardian of the Blue Horizon', described as one of the island nation's highest honors. However, the celebratory mood was quickly overshadowed when observers noticed highly unusual details on the award certificate.
The official document contained glaring spelling errors, writing 'repubblic' instead of 'republic' and 'Seycheeles' instead of 'Seychelles'. Furthermore, upon closer inspection by digital analysts, several internet users pointed out that the certificate's text appeared to be generated by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Adding to the controversy, investigative journalists discovered that the award had been created merely three days before Modi's arrival, making him the first and only recipient of this distinction to date.
Facing a storm of criticism on social media and international press, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Seychelles issued an official statement on July 2, 2026. They explained that a 'working draft' had been accidentally leaked and assured the public that an 'authentic and duly approved' version had already been issued, maintaining that the distinction itself was genuine.
Meanwhile, in India, the opposition party, the Indian National Congress, did not hesitate to mock the situation. Politician Supriya Shrinate took to social media, stating that Modi would run to receive any award, criticizing the haste that led to misspelling the official name of the Republic of Seychelles. In contrast, Modi's ruling party, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) (a major right-wing political party in India), defended the act, calling it a 'moment of pride for India' due to Modi's 'green leadership'.
This is not the first time Modi, who has been in power for 12 years (since 2014), has received honors that raise eyebrows. Just a month earlier, in June 2026, before his visit to Israel, the Israeli parliament (the Knesset) hastily created the 'Medal of the Knesset'. Modi received it upon landing, once again becoming the sole recipient so far.
In 2019, Modi was the inaugural recipient of the Philip Kotler Presidential Award in India, designed to recognize national leadership. However, the award's website soon became inactive, and it was never presented to another leader.
Nilanjan Mukhopadhyay, a prominent biographer of Modi, suggested that the intention behind collecting these awards—often granted in circumstances that invite scrutiny—is to project to his domestic followers that he is revered worldwide for his greatness. This narrative implies that India's growing global influence is directly tied to his personal charisma.
Over the past year, reinforcing this strategy of international projection, Modi also became the first foreign head of state to receive the Grand Honor Nishan of Ethiopia and the Order of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. These diplomatic gestures highlight a positive and hopeful trajectory for India's international relations, fostering new global ties even as they spark lively debates back home.
